Life With A Portuguese
Water Dog
Having a Portuguese
Water Dog is a tremendous joy. We got so much more than we expected with
Ginger. We thought we would get a pet. Instead, we gained a family member
who would make us play constantly, laugh often, walk frequently, and even
shout occasionally. Ginger greets us every day when we get home. She even
greets us when we come back from being in a different room. She loves us
completely. She can't stand to be in a room where we are not. She is totally
loyal. She is friendly yet protective. I have no doubt that Ginger would
fight to the death for us if she felt like she needed to.
We enjoy
how much Ginger loves the water. She fetches, swims, floats on a mat,
and lifeguards. We have a boat and one of her favorite things to do is
sit on the bow and guard it. She alerts us to any suspicious behavior.
Like a dangerous 4 year old playing ball or an older gentleman reading
the paper.
We love
to teach Ginger tricks. Portuguese Water Dogs are very intelligent. It
usually only takes a day or two for her to learn something new. So far
she can: sit, stay, down, wait, leave it, be easy, wave, say please, beg,
put her toys up where they belong, dance, and play dead. She is amazing.
Ginger loves
stuffed animals. When the doorbell rings or a car pulls up she grabs one
quickly to greet the visitor. Many people think she wants to play fetch
when what she really wants is for them to simply admire her toy.
Our Portuguese
Water Dog has enriched our lives more than we knew a dog could. We highly
recommend this dog to any one who wants an inside dog, loves to laugh,
has time to play, patience to train, and money for toys, vet visits, and
grooming.
