The breed has been around for thousands of years. This is a true working dog. Long ago these happy, cheerful, loving, yet sensitive creatures worked along side Portuguese fishermen. These canine helpers would do tasks such as carry ropes and messages from one boat to another, retrieve nets and guard boats. I have read that they actually earned a salary that was given to them in both money and fish.
