How We Got Our Portuguese
Water Dog
Okay, we made or
decision. I began looking in the paper for portie puppies. (That seems
so funny now) Then we went on line and found a puppy list. There was one
litter in Houston. We were so excited. We would call and see when we could
pick up the puppy. This was another joke.
What we didn't know was that Portie puppies are more valuable than gold.
They are rare so puppies are spoken for long before they are born. Sometimes
even before the breeding takes place.
Another thing we didn't know was that adopting a child would not be a
lot harder than adopting a PWD puppy. Breeders are being very responsible
and they want to place these puppies in good homes. You must apply and
be approved. We started getting nervous.
We finally found a breeder, Dr. Linda Fowler, who co-owned a dog that
had just been bred. I spoke to her many times by phone, communicated with
her via e-mail, sent her pictures of our home and family, came up with
a plan for how to raise a PWD correctly, and filled about an application.
We were approved. Eighteen weeks later we flew to Atlanta, Georgia to
pick up our puppy. We were so excited.
